6 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking Via Marangu Route

6 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking Via Marangu Route

Trekking Overview

Mount Kilimanjaro – the name alone stirs dreams of adventure and accomplishment. And if you’re planning to summit Africa’s highest peak, the Marangu Route, famously nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route,” is a classic choice. Over the span of 6 days, this trek offers scenic beauty, comfortable hut accommodations, and a steady ascent through various ecological zones. Whether you’re a first-time trekker or a seasoned hiker, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know for your 6 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking via Marangu Route.

Day 1 – Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

  • Elevation: 1,870m to 2,700m

  • Distance: 8 km

  • Duration: ~4-5 hours

You’ll check in at Marangu Gate, sign the mountain register, and start trekking through the lush rainforest. Monkeys, exotic birds, and moss-covered trees create a jungle-like vibe. Overnight at Mandara Hut.

Day 2 – Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

  • Elevation: 2,700m to 3,720m

  • Distance: 12 km

  • Duration: ~6-8 hours

The trail moves into moorland, with alien-like plants and sweeping views. Expect cooler temps and thinner air. You’ll reach Horombo Hut, your home for the next two nights.

Day 3 – Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

  • Take a short hike to Zebra Rocks (3,980m) or even Mawenzi Ridge for the bold.

  • This day is critical to help your body adjust to the altitude, boosting your summit chances significantly.

Day 4 – Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 4,700m

  • Distance: 10 km

  • Duration: ~6-7 hours

The scenery turns stark and moonlike. Fewer plants, more rocks. The trail crosses the “Saddle”—a wide, desolate plain between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Early dinner and rest before the summit push.

Day 5 – Summit Day: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Back to Horombo

  • Start: Midnight

  • Summit: 5,895m

  • Descent to Horombo: 4,700m

It’s the hardest and most rewarding day. The climb to Gilman’s Point is brutal, but when you reach Uhuru Peak, the view (and the emotion) is unforgettable. After photos, you’ll descend to Horombo Hut for much-needed rest.

Day 6 – Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

  • Elevation: 3,720m to 1,870m

  • Distance: 20 km

  • Duration: ~6-7 hours

Tired but proud, you’ll descend through forest back to Marangu Gate. Celebrate with your team and pick up your Kilimanjaro summit certificate!
